The Scientist or Lead Researcher performs a variety of moderately complex research tasks determined by the field and scope of the particular research project/study. Additionally, performs tasks related to the research project independently, but within broad guidelines and subject to periodic review by supervisor or other research staff.

The Northcott Lab in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Scientist or Lead Researcher to perform developmental and tumorigenic studies related to childhood brain cancer using organoids, patient-derived xenografts (PDX), and tumoroids. The Northcott lab is internationally recognized for making seminal contributions to the understanding of the genomics and developmental biology of childhood brain tumors.

We seek a technically skilled, self-motivated, and meticulously organized stem cell scientist with expertise in primary cell culture, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and/or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Experience with organoid differentiation protocols, propagating PDX models, and/or tumoroids is considered highly desirable. Candidates should be able to perform and coordinate a wide range of laboratory research procedures and conduct complex support tasks and projects determined by our current research. Duties will include propagation of ESCs and iPSCs, generation, maintenance, and characterization of organoids, PDX, and tumoroids for the purpose of studying oncogenic mechanisms underlying childhood brain tumors.

Prior experience with molecular and cellular assays such as single-cell/nuclei sequencing, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN, immunofluorescence imaging, and FACS analysis are highly desirable. The position will involve interaction with other laboratory staff and trainees on multidisciplinary projects and presentation of scientific findings during regular working group meetings. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively and work both independently and as part of a team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory experiments using existing, modified or newly developed techniques/protocols

  • Sets up protocols, trouble shoots experiments using new or modified laboratory techniques

  • Identifies experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem. Processes, organizes and summarizes data and reports results

  • May assist in the drafting and editing of manuscripts.

  • Provides basic lab operation support to include equipment maintenance and purchasing. Monitors inventory and orders lab supplies as needed. Performs calibration of instruments and equipment as necessary.

  • Provides guidance to entry-level employees.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution

  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required

Lead Researcher Minimum Experience:

  • Five (5) years of relevant, post-degree work experience is required

  • Two (2) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree

  • No experience is required with a PHD

Scientist Minimum Experience:

  • Seven (7) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required

  • Five (5) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree

  • Three (3) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $65,520 - $114,400 per year for the role of Scientist or Lead Researcher - Developmental Neurobiology - Paul Northcott Lab.
