Allegheny Science & Technology (AST) is looking for a Communications Specialist to support the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy's Office of Spent Fuel and High-Level Waste Disposition (NE-8) with staff support services primarily focused on facilitating NE-8 staff member public presentation and communications activities in Washington, DC!
Position Responsibilities:
  • Liaising between NE-8 federal staff and internal or external points of contact inviting or requesting public presentations at meetings, events, conferences, or webinars, to accept or decline invitations, confirm dates and times, locations or weblinks, speaking topics, and presentation format, etc.
  • Drafting presentation visuals including graphics, PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, etc.
  • Drafting talking points.
  • Drafting responses to media inquiries.
  • Developing draft language for digital communications including press releases, program webpages, social media, responses to questions from external stakeholders, etc.
  • Providing in-person staff support for NE-8 public events including conferences, expos, informational briefings for Congressional Members, staff, and others.
  • Managing scheduling and shipping for NE-8 booths, model materials, swag, and/or equipment.
Position Requirements:
  • Must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 5 years of direct communications experience.
  • Experience in science or nuclear energy industry preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of multimedia production tools for creating presentations and other visual content.
  • Ability to organize communications materials and related files and documents (presentations, graphics, talking points, approved language) in an Office SharePoint with an intuitive structure and naming system to manage version control and clearly identify newest version.
  • Experienced user of MS Office Suite software, including word, PowerPoint, excel, one note, SharePoint, etc.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and trends.
  • Ability to develop and draft social media content.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and understandable manner to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills for various communication materials.
